Hey guys! It's that time of year where Grammy nominations are announced & we wait anxiously to find out who will get the highest honors! I have so many thoughts running through my head about this year's nominees so this is exactly what this blog post is going to be about today! These are my personal opinions on some main categories!
Grammy 2020 Nomination Thoughts:
Record of the Year:
Hey Ma by Bon Iver
Bad Guy by Billie Eilish
7 Rings by Ariana Grande
Hard Place by H.E.R.
Talk by Khalid
Old Town Road by Lil Nas X & Billy Ray Cyrus
Truth Hurts by Lizzo
Sunflower by Post Malone & Swae Lee
Who I want to win: Khalid, H.E.R., Ariana, or Lizzo
Who is realistically going to win: Lizzo or Old Town Road
My opinion on the category: Let's be honest, this category is ALL OVER THE PLACE! There's way too many different types of nominees. Knowing the Grammy's they are going to go with the most played song & as much as it pains me to say they will probably go with Old Town Road based off the fact they broke so many Billboard records. I think more of talent when it comes to the Grammy's & personally I think Khalid or H.E.R. should win based off of talent & brilliance!
Album of the Year:
I, I by Bon Iver
Norman F**king Rockwell by Lana Del Rey
When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? by Billie Eilish
Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande
I Used To Know Her by H.E.R.
7 by Lil Nas X
Cuz I Love You (Deluxe) by Lizzo
Father of the Bride by Vampire Weekend
Who I want to win: Ariana, H.E.R., or Lizzo
Who is realistically going to win: Ariana or Lizzo
My opinion on the category: Another category that's ALL OVER THE FREAKING PLACE!! I like how they did a variety of different types of artists but I feel like it makes it THAT MUCH HARDER to decide. Also, who's Bon Iver?? Bon Iver is definitely the "Beck" of the main categories this year. If you understand that joke, you are a real one. I really think Ariana is going to take this award, I hope she does because I LOVE LOVE TUN!!!
Song of the Year:
Always Remember Us This Way by Lady Gaga
Bad Guy by Billie Eilish
Bring My Flowers Now by Brandi Carlile
Hard Place by H.E.R.
Lover by Taylor Swift
Norman F**king Rockwell by Lana Del Rey
Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi
Truth Hurts by Lizzo
Who I want to win: Gaga, H.E.R., Taylor, or Lizzo
Who is realistically going to win: Gaga, Taylor, or Lizzo
My opinion on the category: I like this list WAY WAY better than the Record of the Year list! I'd maybe put Ariana's Thank U Next or Khalid's Talk in the place of Billie or Brandi but that's just my personal opinion. Also, Sucker by the Jonas Brothers deserved a main category nominee JUST SAYING that was the best comeback of all time! I'm sorry, I'm just not a big Bad Guy fan. Never have been so I don't understand why it has SO MANY NOMINEES! Personally though, my top favorite to win this is Gaga. Always Remember Us This Way is MY FAVORITE song off of A Star Is Born & Gaga made me tear up with this song when I first heard it seeing the movie so I'm gonna be surprised if it doesn't win in my opinion.
Best New Artist:
Black Pumas
Billie Eilish
Lizzo
Lil Nas X
Maggie Rogers
Rosalia
Tank and the Bangas
Yola
Who I want to win: Lizzo or Rosalia
Who is realistically going to win: Lizzo, Lil Nas X, or Billie
My opinion on the category: I don't know a ton of these artists than Lizzo, Lil Nas X, Rosalia, Billie, & Maggie Rogers. The best new artist category in the past has been known for picking the most popular artist so that's why I think Lizzo, Lil Nas X, or Billie is going to win. I lowkey really want Rosalia to win though! I've heard her on several award shows & I love her style & voice so much & fun fact she's the first new artist nominee to only sing in Spanish so this is huge for the Latin music industry!! I'll probably be annoyed if Lil Nas X or Billie wins just because I think they are super overrated.
Best Pop Solo Performance:
Spirit by Beyoncé
Bad Guy by Billie Eilish
7 Rings by Ariana Grande
Truth Hurts by Lizzo
You Need To Calm Down by Taylor Swift
Who I want to win: Beyoncé, Ariana, or Lizzo
Who is realistically going to win: Beyoncé or Ariana
My opinion on the category: LOVE HOW THE WHOLE CATEGORY IS WOMEN!!! I'm surprised Gaga's Always Remember Us This Way isn't on this list considering the fact Gaga's voice sounded FLAWLESS in that song but it's whatever. Again, WHY IS BAD GUY GETTING SO MANY NOMINEES? THAT SONG ISN'T HER BEST SONG!! I'm just personally not into it & I love Truth Hurts but I think one of her other songs like Cuz I Love You should have been on here instead of Truth Hurts. Same with Taylor, I think Lover would have been a way better song choice for this category!
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance:
Boyfriend by Ariana Grande & Social House
Sucker by the Jonas Brothers
Old Town Road by Lil Nas X & Billy Ray Cyrus
Sunflower by Post Malone & Swae Lee
Senorita by Shawn Mendes & Camilia Cabello
Who I want to win: THE JOBROS!!!!!
Who is realistically going to win: JoBros, Shawnmila, or Old Town Road
My opinion on the category: I'm rooting for the Jonas Brothers 100000%!!! Their comeback was truly the best & everyone went crazy over it! I'm still in shock that they are back together! I love Ariana, Posty, & Shawn but 10000% this should go to the Jonas Brothers & honestly I'm going to be PRESSED if Old Town Road wins over the Jonas Brothers!
Best Pop Vocal Album:
The Lion King: The Gift by Beyoncé
When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? by Billie Eilish
Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande
No. 6 Collaborations Project by Ed Sheeran
Lover by Taylor Swift
Who I want to win: Ariana or Ed
Who is realistically going to win: Ariana, Beyoncé, or Taylor
My opinion on the category: I personally am a huge fan of the No. 6 Collaborations project & that's why I want it to win but I'll be fine with Ariana, Beyoncé, or Taylor winning too!
Best R&B Song:
Could've Been by H.E.R. & Bryson Tiller
Look At Me Now by Emily King
No Guidance by Chris Brown & Drake
Roll Some Mo by Lucky Daye
Say So by PJ Morton & Jojo
Who I want to win: H.E.R./Bryson, Chris/Drake, or the song with Jojo
Who is realistically going to win: H.E.R./Bryson Tiller
My opinion on the category: Soooo many great artists in this category it's so hard to choose! My favorite song out of all of these is H.E.R. & Bryson Tiller for sure! I love & respect both of these artists! I also am so proud of Jojo for getting a nomination after all she's been through in the industry! I'll also be very happy if she wins!
Best Rap Song
Bad Idea by YBN Cordae & Chance The Rapper
Gold Roses by Rick Ross & Drake
A Lot by 21 Savage
Racks in the Middle by Nipsey Hussle, Roddy Rich, & Hit-Boy
Suge by DaBaby
Who I want to win: 21 Savage or DaBaby
Who is realistically going to win: Nipsey or 21 Savage
My opinion on the category: Let's be honest, I only know 2 of these songs so who I want to win is really based off of the 2 songs I know. There's many great artists in this category though that really anyone could win & I wouldn't be mad!
Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song:
Only Jesus by Casting Crowns
God Only Knows by for King & Country & Dolly Parton
Haven't Seen It Yet by Danny Gokey
God's Not Done With You by Tauren Wells
Rescue Story by Zach Williams
Who I want to win: for King & Country
Who is realistically going to win: for King & Country
My opinion on the category: For sure for King & Country has this award in the BAG!!! God Only Knows was such a huge success this year & they deserve the recognition for it! Everyone in this category is great but at the end of the day I don't need to really defend this that for King & Country is going to win this!
Best Contemporary Christian Music Album:
I Know A Ghost by Crowder
Burn the Ships by for King & Country
Haven't Seen It Yet by Danny Gokey
The Elements by TobyMac
Holy Roar by Chris Tomlin
Who I want to win: for King & Country or TobyMac
Who is realistically going to win: for King & Country
My opinion on the category: The fact that Burn the Ships & The Elements are even against each other makes me so nervous! Both albums equally deserve the award!
So these are my opinions on the following categories!
Next, I'm going to through which songs/albums got robbed from the Grammys & deserved nominations!
Songs/Albums that got ROBBED:
The Elements by TobyMac & Burn the Ships by for King & Country:
I know Burn the Ships is barely starting to hit the radio so they have a chance possibly next year & hopefully Chrisitan radio will wake up & realize The Elements is a CHRISTIAN GRAMMY WORTHY SONG! Both songs should have gotten some kind of recognition.
Vertigo by Khalid & basically the whole Free Spirit album:
Vertigo by Khalid was indeed released during the eligibility period & I am shocked it didn't get a nominee in one of the R&B categories. That song moved me to tears in the recording & live! I'm also super shocked Free Spirit as an album didn't get nominated for anything, not even album of the year! Free Spirit was a GENIUS album & not one song was a skip! I would have thought maybe in the R&B categories but nope, it got ROBBED!
If I Can't Have You by Shawn Mendes:
I am personally super shocked this got 0 nominations considering how big this song was this year! I wasn't expecting it to be in a major category but at least in Best Pop Solo Performance it deserved a nomination!
The Happiness Begins album:
Another one I am completely shocked about as well! I was so expecting for the Happiness Begins album to at least get nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album but I guess not. The Jonas Brothers comeback was HUGE & the album immediately hit #1 on iTunes within its first 24 hours. With how popular this whole era was, I'm shocked it wasn't recognized at the Grammys but at least they have 1 nomination for Sucker.
So there goes my thoughts on the nominations. I hope y'all enjoyed this post & I can't wait for the Grammy's this upcoming year!
It'll definitely be an interesting one!!
