My Grammys 2021 Nomination Thoughts
Hey guys! It's finally here! GRAMMYS SEASON & my absolutely iconic nomination thoughts. It's been a tradition of mine ever since I started this blog in 2017 that I do nomination thoughts. I love when great music gets recognized & I love watching music award shows! Sit back, relax, grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine because this is going to be a LONG POST full of all of my bottled up feelings that I'm about to just spill!
These are my honest & personal opinions about this year's nominees! Normally like I've done all of my other award show nomination thoughts posts I've done this year, I'd link my predictions I made but y'all... that was just a fantasy & what I wished would have happened. I spent 2 months making FANTASY PREDICTIONS when in my heart I knew the Recording Academy was going to have way different ideas in mind! Let's get straight into this post!
My Grammys 2021 Nomination Thoughts
Record of the Year:
Black Parade by Beyonce
Colors by Black Pumas
Rockstar by DaBaby & Roddy Ricch
Say So by Doja Cat
Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish
Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa
Circles by Post Malone
Savage by Megan Thee Stallion & Beyonce
Who I want to win: Beyonce, Megan/Beyonce, Dua, or Posty
Who will realistically win: Beyonce, Dua, or Posty
My opinions on this category: When I tell y'all I did not see this coming... I truly did not. I knew Dua, Beyonce, & Posty were going to get some kind of recognition but I could go on all day about who I think deserved those other spots because there's so many other people that came to my head but hey, I'm not part of the Recording Academy so I don't get to decide! I'm shocked SO MANY Tik Tok songs got nominated. Vine songs would've been LAUGHED at in 2014 but times have changed & I need to get out of the Vine days & realize how big of a impact Tik Tok has made on the music industry in the past year. Obviously, the Recording Academy spent a lot of time on Tik Tok this year HAHA! Truly though, I'm glad some of my favorites got nominated & I hope one of the people that I want to win ends up winning!
Album of the Year:
Chilombo by Jhene Aiko
Black Pumas (Deluxe Edition) by Black Pumas
Everyday Life by Coldplay
Djesse Vol. 3 by Jacob Collier
Women in Music Pt. III by Haim
Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa
Hollywood's Bleeding by Post Malone
Folklore by Taylor Swift
Who I want to win: Dua or Posty
Who will realistically win: Dua, Posty, or Taylor
My opinions on this category: I'm truly shocked at the outcome of this category. Of course, I had other ideas in mind like After Hours (I'll do a whole other post on that because truly, the whole situation is ridiculous) & Fine Line which are both 2 albums that made me absolutely emotional & honestly, any album that makes me emotional I automatically think is Grammy worthy! Anyways! Let's focus on these nominees! Truly... these are the most RANDOM PEOPLE EVER! Jhene? Coldplay? Haim? Like what? Jhene's album was good & her voice is super soothing but I definitely wouldn't have said "Album of the Year". I would have considered her 2017 album Trip "Album of the Year" material. It's not my favorite of her's but hey much respect to Jhene, CONGRATS! Haim's nomination was random too like I so would have told y'all for alternative but wow.... I'm shocked. AND COLDPLAY????? I love Coldplay & I want to attend one of their concerts so badly someday & this album was good but I didn't think it was general fields excellent but hey again, congrats! I wouldn't have gotten through 2020 & this pandemic without Future Nostalgia so I'm really rooting for Dua in this category but also Hollywood's Bleeding MEANS SO MUCH TO ME & the Runaway Tour last year was OUTSTANDING & every song is a jam! AHHH! I'm conflicted between Dua or Posty for sure!!
Song of the Year:
Black Parade by Beyonce
The Box by Roddy Ricch
Cardigan by Taylor Swift
Circles by Post Malone
Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa
Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish
I Can't Breathe by H.E.R.
If the World Was Ending by Julia Michaels & JP Saxe
Who I want to win: Beyonce, Posty, H.E.R., or Dua
Who will realistically win: Beyonce or H.E.R.
My opinions on this category: Definitely this category looks more like what I had predicted but still so many artists got robbed! The only song I nod my head & ask myself, "Why this song??" is the Julia Michaels song. I prefer Julia's songwriting over her own songs (except for the song with Niall Horan that song we do in fact stan) & I just thought the song she got nominated for was just alright. I'm shocked I Can't Breathe wasn't also in the Record of the Year category. I love I Can't Breathe & every lyric is so powerful & SO WELL SAID! I know I was rooting for Beyonce, Posty, & Dua in this category & Record of the Year but I really want I Can't Breathe to win because of how excellent that song truly is. If you haven't listened to it, PLEASE LISTEN TO IT NOW!!!
Best New Artist:
Phoebe Bridges
Ingrid Andress
Doja Cat
Kaytranada
Megan Thee Stallion
Noah Cyrus
Chika
D Smoke
Who I want to win: Megan Thee Stallion
Who will realistically win: Doja or Megan Thee Stallion
My opinions on this category: I knew Doja & Megan were going to be up against each other in this category & realistically, it will come down to them. I'm not familiar with the other artists except for Noah which I don't even consider Noah as a new artist. I personally am Team Megan ALL OF THE WAY for this category!
Best Pop Solo Performance:
Yummy by Justin Bieber
Cardigan by Taylor Swift
Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish
Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa
Say So by Doja Cat
Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles
Who I want to win: Harry
Who will realistically win: Harry or Taylor
My opinions on this category: I could honestly cry because if you don't know me or didn't look at my predictions, I am a Harry Styles stan for life! I truly think Harry deserved general field nominations but again, I'll do a whole other post on that but for now, I'm just so GRATEFUL HARRY GOT NOMINATED!!! HARRY STYLES IS A GRAMMY NOMINATED ARTIST AHHHHHH! I personally wanted Adore You over Watermelon Sugar for Pop Solo but you know what? I'm just happy he's even nominated!! I really want Harry to win!! Ok we have to have this conversation. But y'all.... I love Justin Bieber & y'all know I'm a 2009 Belieber but... YUMMY FOR A GRAMMY???? WHAT???? I totally did not see this one coming! Yummy doesn't deserve the hate it gets but I just think of it more as a fun pop song & not a Grammy worthy pop song. There's so many other songs I would rather have in Yummy's place like Midnight Sky by Miley Cyrus or Blinding Lights by The Weeknd!
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance:
Un Dia (One Day) by J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny, & Tainy
Intentions by Justin Bieber & Quavo
Dynamite by BTS
Rain on Me by Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande
Exile by Taylor Swift & Bon Iver
Who I want to win: Gaga/Ariana
Who will realistically win: Gaga/Ariana or Taylor/Bon Iver
My opinions on this category: This category isn't too far fetched from what I had predicted & honestly, I'm not shocked by any of these songs being nominated. I'm 100% Team Rain on Me because I love that song & you know I actually pay attention to what the actual category means & their vocals in this song are OUTSTANDING! Gaga & Ariana KILLED IT! Lowkey though, if BTS won that would be cute but from the direction that the Recording Academy has gone in, I don't see them winning as a high possibility. When I made my predictions, I thought that this category was going to be a no brainer & that Rain on Me HAS IT IN THE BAG but recently I did watch Taylor Swift's Disney Plus Folklore studio sessions movie & at first, I thought Exile was so boring but after watching the documentary, I truly got to understand the song better. It's still not my favorite Folklore song (that's August) but I would not be shocked if they gave the award to Exile.
Best Pop Vocal Album:
Changes by Justin Bieber
Chromatica by Lady Gaga
Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa
Fine Line by Harry Styles
Folklore by Taylor Swift
Who I want to win: Harry
Who will realistically win: Harry, Gaga, Taylor, or Dua
My opinions on this category: Every one of these albums has meant something to me this year (yes, even Changes lowkey I'm a Changes stan)! If I had to choose one to win this category, I would choose Harry hands down! Y'all already know how much I love Harry Styles & I will say it again, he deserved an Album of the Year nomination for sure! I'm really rooting for Fine Line though in this category because it's the one chance Fine Line as a entire album will get Grammy recognition & I'm so passionate about this album winning a Grammy. This album truly was a MASTERPIECE & deserves it all! I also wouldn't be mad with any of the other albums winning but I would be disappointed if Fine Line didn't win but I wouldn't be so mad that I would bash the other album. I have a good feeling about Harry getting recognition in this category for sure! I REALLY WANT HIM TO WIN!
I had originally shared my predictions on the Dance Recording category but I did not know any of the songs nominated so I will not be sharing my in depth thoughts on those. I will say that SAINt JHN's Roses got ROBBED. I thought for sure that would be in this category!
I also had originally shared my predictions for the Rock category but again, I wasn't overly familiar with a lot of the songs. Take What You Want by Post Malone, Ozzy Osbourne, & Travis Scott got ROBBED!! I really wanted that song to get Rock category recognition! I really do hope though for the Rock Song category that Tame Impala does win!
Best Alternative Music Album:
Fetch the Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple
Hyperspace by Beck
Punisher by Phoebe Bridges
Jaime by Britany Howard
The Slow Rush by Tame Impala
Who I want to win: Tame Impala
Who will realistically win: Tame Impala or Fiona Apple
My opinions on this category: Litterally, ANYONE BUT BECK (if you are a Beyonce fan, you would totally understand that reference. I still think Beyonce deserved Album of the Year that year)! I really did enjoy this new Tame Impala album & I truly want it to get its well deserved recognition in this category!
Best R&B Performance:
Lightning & Thunder by Jhene Aiko & John Legend
Black Parade by Beyonce
All I Need by Jacob Collier, Mahalia, & Ty Dolla Sign
Goat Head by Brittany Howard
See Me by Emily King
Who I want to win: Beyonce
Who will realistically win: Beyonce
My opinions on this category: I'm shocked with the outcome of this category. I thought for sure artists like Chloe x Halle, Summer Walker, & Kehlani would have been included in this but this is what we have! I'm really rooting for Black Parade to win this category!
I'm not going to go overly in detail on the Traditional R&B Category because the only song I knew was Wonder What She Thinks of Me by Chloe x Halle & I do in fact want that to win!
Best R&B Song:
Better Than I Imagine by Robert Glasper, H.E.R., & Meshell Ndegeocello
Black Parade by Beyonce
Collide by Tiana Major9 & EARTHGANG
Do It by Chloe x Halle
Slow Down by Skip Marley & H.E.R.
Who I want to win: Chloe x Halle
Who will realistically win: Beyonce or Chloe x Halle
My opinions on this category: I do know more songs in this category than I did in the R&B Performance category! I'm rooting for Chloe x Halle for this category because all of those Quarantine performances for not only Do It but every other song were OUTSTANDING & deserve all of the recognition possible! I really am shocked Chloe x Halle didn't get nominated for more but I'm just glad they got Grammy recognition!
Best Progressive R&B Album:
Chilombo by Jhene Aiko
Ungodly Hour by Chloe x Halle
Free Nationals by Free Nationals
Fuck Yo Feelings by Robert Glasper
It Is What It Is by Thundercat
Who I want to win: Chloe x Halle
Who will realistically win: Chloe x Halle or Jhene
My opinions on this category: I only know Jhene & Chloe x Halle's albums so I have no idea how the other albums sound but just from popularity alone I think it's going to come down to Jhene or Chloe x Halle! I love both artists but I'm really rooting for Chloe x Halle because I did truly love this album & every award show/other quarantine event performances for the songs from this album have been OUTSTANDING! I love Jhene & I do have some favorites from Chilombo but I'm more of a Trip fan (which was her 2017 album). I do love listening to Chilombo when I want to relax or am taking a peaceful drive but I just have more attachment to Ungodly Hour plus I seek out to more R&B music like what Ungodly Hour is! Congrats Chloe x Halle & Jhene!!
For Best R&B Album I only knew of John Legend's album so therefore I am rooting for John Legend to win!
Best Rap Performance:
Dior by Pop Smoke
Deep Reverence by Big Sean & Nipsey Hussle
Bop by DaBaby
What's Poppin by Jack Harlow
The Bigger Picture by Lil Baby
Savage by Megan Thee Stallion & Beyonce
Who I want to win: Megan/Beyonce
Who will realistically win: Literally any of these people!
My opinions on this category: I'm not shocked by the outcome of this category at all! I truly wouldn't mind if any of these people won! I need to get more familiar with Big Sean/Nipsey & Lil Baby's songs but I am fans of them from other songs they have done so I wouldn't mind if they won! If I had to choose one winner just from the music I've listened to this year, I'd say Megan/Beyonce because I love both of them so much!
Best Melodic Rap Performance:
Highest in the Room by Travis Scott
Laugh Now Cry Later by Drake & Lil Durk
Rockstar by DaBaby & Roddy Ricch
Lockdown by Anderson Paak
The Box by Roddy Ricch
Who I want to win: The Box
Who will realistically win: The Box or Rockstar
My opinions on this category: I had no idea how the outcome of this category was going to be but the only complaint I have is that Juice WRLD got ROBBED but we can talk all about that another time! I really think Roddy Ricch had a HUGE YEAR & deserves proper recognition for it. I think The Box is a super well produced song so that's why I am rooting for The Box but I truly think Roddy will win for either that or Rockstar considering Rockstar was EVERYWHERE on Tik Tok!
So many great rap albums got ROBBED in the Best Rap Album category which I will discuss more on that in another post & I'm not going to share my thoughts because I wasn't familiar with any of the albums nominated!
I know I did predictions for the Country category mainly because I wanted I Hope by Gabby Barrett to get nominated, but it did get ROBBED.
10,000 Hours by Dan + Shay & Justin Bieber deserve Best Country Duo/Group Performance!!
Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song:
The Blessing (Live) by Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes, & Elevation Worship
Sunday Morning by Lecrae & Kirk Frankin
Holy Water by We the Kingdom
Famous For (I Believe) by Tauren Wells & Jenn Johnson
There Was Jesus by Zach Williams & Dolly Parton
Who I want to win: Tauren/Jenn
Who will realistically win: We the Kingdom
My opinions on this category: I'm very shocked by the outcome of this category! There's SO MANY songs I would have put in place of a bunch of these songs (especially TOGETHER by For King & Country, Tori Kelly, & Kirk Franklin)! My mother is a huge Tauren Wells fan & so am I so I am really rooting for him to win! I also enjoyed the Holy Water song a lot too but I'm 10000% Team Tauren Wells!
Best Contemporary Christian Music Album:
Run to The Father by Cody Carnes
All of My Best Friends by Hillsong Young & Free
Holy Water by We The Kingdom\
Citizen of Heaven by Tauren Wells
Jesus is King by Kanye West
Who I want to win: Tauren Wells
Who will realistically win: Tauren Wells
My opinions on this category: I really did love the Citizen of Heaven album therefore, I really want it to win! That's all I'm going to say on this category!
Best Latin Pop Album or Urban Album deserves to go to YHLQMDLG by Bad Bunny 1000% just saying!
Best Music Video:
Brown Skin Girl by Beyonce, Saint JHN, Wizkid, & Blue Ivy Carter
Life Is Good by Future & Drake
Lockdown by Anderson Paak
Adore You by Harry Styles
Goliath by Woodkid
Who I want to win: Harry or Beyonce
Who will realistically win: Harry or Beyonce
My opinions on this category: I did not originally predict this category in my predictions post but I really should have. I know I am the biggest Harry stan ever but I LOVED the video for Brown Skin Girl so I am therefore very conflicted! I loved both of these videos so much & found them both very entertaining to watch. Just as long as one of them wins, I'll be happy!
