My Thoughts on Past Best Pop Vocal Album Winners!
Hey guys! It’s the start of Grammys week & today I will be sharing my thoughts on past Best Pop Vocal Album winners from the past couple of years! I will be sharing my honest thoughts about each album, whether they deserved the win, & who I think should have personally won. If you like this post, ALWAYS LET ME KNOW & don’t forget to stay tuned for another Grammys themed post later in the week!
When I think of Best Pop Vocal album, I think about who served the BEST vocals & just absolutely killed it so let’s get right into this!
Grammys 2000
Winner: Brand New Day by Sting
Other Nominees: Millennium by the Backstreet Boys, Believe by Cher, Ricky Martin by Ricky Martin, & Mirrorball by Sarah McLachlan
So I am very familiar with the Brand New Day album because I grew up listening to a lot of Sting. I get why it won but at the same time... MILLENNIUM IS A ICONIC ALBUM! I’m such a Backstreet Boys stan so I would have personally picked that album just from the sole purpose that Larger Than Life is on the album & that’s literally one of my all time favorite songs ever. My second choice would have been Ricky Martin just because I love him. I get why Sting won though. The album was unique & different from his other albums in the past & I would know that because I grew up listening to a lot of Sting. The song Brand New Day is a jam!
Grammys 2001
Winner: Two Against Nature by Steely Dan
Other Nominees: Inside Job by Don Henley, Music by Madonna, No Strings Attached by NSYNC, & Oops!... I Did it Again by Britney Spears
So if we are being honest, I only knew the NSYNC & Britney album so in fairness to my criticism, I listened to the winning album & honestly.... NSYNC & BRITNEY GOT ROBBED OVER ELEVATOR MUSIC! It just wasn't my cup of tea so the Recording Academy had boring taste that year because that wasn't it.
Grammys 2002
Winner: Lovers Rock by Sade
Other Nominees: Celebrity by NSYNC, Whoa, Nelly! by Nelly Furtado, Songs from the West Coast by Elton John, & All for You by Janet Jackson
Again, I thought I didn't know anything off of the winning album but when I listened to the most famous song By Your Side, I knew exactly what this album was! Again, I have more attachment to the NSYNC album so of course that would have been my main choice but I can see vocally how Sade won!
Grammys 2003
Winner: Come Away With Me by Norah Jones
Other Nominees: Unwanted by Avril Lavigne, Rock Steady by No Doubt, Missundaztood by Pink, & Britney by Britney Spears
Again, I get why Norah won. Norah was the Adele of 2003. I grew up listening to the other albums & out of all of the other albums I probably would’ve picked Avril or Britney but that’s just me & the type of music I grew up with. Vocally, I can’t chose one or the other it’d definitely be tied between those two.
Grammys 2004
Winner: Justified by Justin Timberlake
Other Nominees: Stripped by Christina Aguilera, Brainwashed by George Harrison, Bare by Annie Lennox, & Motown by Michael McDonald
I grew up loving the Justified album but I also grew up loving the Stripped album as well so it would have been hard for me to pick which one I truly wanted to win more but congrats to JT!
Grammys 2006
Winner: Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson
Other Nominees: Extraordinary Machine by Fiona Apple, Wildflower by Sheryl Crow, Chaos & Creation in the Backyard by Paul McCartney, & Love. Angel. Music. Baby. by Gwen Stefani
I LOVE THE BREAKAWAY ALBUM SO KELLY STILL WELL DESERVES THIS! Gwen's album is also a classic & I wouldn't have minded if it had won either!
Grammys 2011
Winner: The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga
Other Nominees: My World 2.0 by Justin Bieber, I Dreamed A Dream by Susan Boyle, Teenage Dream by Katy Perry, & Battle Studies by John Mayer
Well freaking deserved. The Fame Monster vocally is THAT FREAKING ALBUM! It’s huge Justin got nominated so young for this category though he definitely would have been my 2nd choice! Teenage Dream is also a very good album too but I would totally have to agree with the Recording Academy & also pick The Fame Monster!
We are done talking about the past so let's talk about the current nominees....
2021 Nominees:
Changes by Justin Bieber
Fine Line by Harry Styles
Folklore by Taylor Swift
Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa
Chromatica by Lady Gaga
I'm so conflicted because I have attachment issues with every single one of these albums in their own special way. If I had to choose one though... it would definitely have to be Fine Line. I just pray Harry leaves the night with at least one award! He deserves it so much!
