Record of the Year Over the Years!

Record of the Year Over the Years!

ONE MORE SLEEP TILL THE GRAMMYS THIS YEAR!!! I don't know about y'all but I love this time of year where we celebrate the best in music! I've had so much fun with these Grammy themed post & I just thought I would do yet another Grammy themed post! Last night, I was casually going through Wikipedia & it was super interesting to see all of the past winners & it really inspired me to go over the biggest award of the night which is Record of the Year! I'm not going to go through every single year but I'm going as far back as 1996 (the year before I was born)! I hope y'all enjoy this post as much as I have enjoyed making it! Click here to see my thoughts on this year's nominees Click here to see what artists, songs, & albums I personally think got robbed this awards season!

Record of the Year 1996

Winner: Kiss from a Rose by Seal
Other Nominees: One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men; Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio; One of Us by Joan Osbourne; Waterfalls by TLC

I had to start off with 1996! I was going to start off with 1997 because that's the year I was born but 1996 was WAY MORE INTERESTING! I grew up listening to Kiss from a Rose so I'm personally really happy this won! All of these nominees are completely different but if I was on the voting panel & I had to pick I would be SO TORN between One Sweet Day & Kiss from a Rose! One Sweet Day (like Old Town Road) broke so many Billboard records so I bet it was a shock that didn't win! Waterfalls would have also been a good contender but I would have maybe put them more in the Song of the Year category (which Seal won as well, TLC was not nominated but they would have been great for this category)! 1995 was really a good year for music!

Record of the Year 1999

Winner: My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion
Other Nominees: The Boy Is Mine by Brandy & Monica; Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls; Ray of Light by Madonna; You're Still The One by Shania Twain

Another year of really good ROTY nominees! It was a no brainer though that Celine Dion won this! My Heart Will Go On is a CLASSIC! I would have so voted for this song IN A HEART BEAT if I were on the panel because every time I hear this song it gets better & better plus Celine Dion's voice never fails to leave me to tears because of how amazing she is! So 100000% Celine DESERVED!

Record of the Year 2000

Winner: Smooth by Santana & Rob Thomas
Other Nominees: Believe by Cher; I Want It That Way by The Backstreet Boys; Livin la Vida Loca by Ricky Martin; No Scrubs by TLC

WOW! I love every song in this category so this must have been TOUGH for the panel (or at least if I were on that panel I would have given up & not been able to vote because I love every song individually for very different reasons)! Anyone in this category was super deserving of the award! I grew up listening to Smooth so of course I'm thrilled this song got the recognition it gladly deserved! Another song I would have loved to have seen win was I Want It That Way not just because I love them & also grew up listening to this song but for the boy band industry this win would have been HUGE! I feel like boy bands rarely get recognition at the Grammys except for this year with the Jonas Brothers but even that too I had discussed in my other posts how I feel like the Jonas Brothers deserved a main category nominee! I'm such a boy band fan & have been my whole life so of course I'm going to campaign that boy bands deserve more love at the Grammys (One Direction still deserved one Grammy nominee while they were together just saying)! Smooth winning was huge for the Latin music community which is a genre I'm super passionate about as well so Smooth well deserved this!

Record of the Year 2001

Winner: Beautiful Day by U2
Other Nominees: Bye Bye Bye by NSYNC; I Try by Macy Gray; Music by Madonna; Say My Name by Destiny's Child

Ok, this is the first year I'm going to criticize the Recording Academy for because HOW DID THIS WIN OVER NSYNC & DESTINY'S CHILD???????? I genuinely don't understand! I would have totally thought one of those would have won! Beautiful Day is just a bland song. Not half as exciting as the other nominees. Say My Name is a classic & deserved that huge recognition! Say My Name did win big in 2 of the R&B categories that year but STILL! Also, like I said with the Backstreet Boys in 2000, it's super cool these boy bands got these huge nominations because rarely now this would happen! It would have been huge if NSYNC won this award just for the boy band industry! 2001 was a disappointment for this category.

Record of the Year 2004

Winner: Clocks by Coldplay
Other Nominees: Crazy in Love by Beyoncé & Jay-Z; Hey Ya! by OutKast; Lose Yourself by Eminem; Where is the Love? by The Black Eyed Peas & Justin Timberlake

To be fair, every song is special in their own way & I'm a fan of every song! Clocks wouldn't have been my first choice for this category but I'm not going to say they outright didn't deserve this win because they did! Clocks is such a pretty song & the music in it is so cool! My first 2 choices for this category would have been Beyoncé/Jay-Z or the Black Eyed Peas/Justin Timberlake! I'm just a big Beyoncé fan & want every win for her possible & The Black Eyed Peas & Justin really did something when they came out with this song! Where is the Love is still a message society will always need no matter how hard times are! From lyrics alone I would have given the award to Where is the Love! OutKast & Eminem would have also been super deserving of this award too. Lose Yourself is actually my all time favorite Eminem song! OutKast is just super cool & Hey Ya will forever be THAT JAM! This one must have been tough for the panel!

Record of the Year 2006

Winner: Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day
Other Nominees: Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz & De La Soul; Gold Digger by Kanye West; Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani; We Belong Together by Mariah Carey

Green Day would have been my 2nd choice for this category! It's a classic but honestly Mariah got ROBBED! We Belong Together is also a CLASSIC but I just think Mariah's vocals in this song were some of her best she's done in her career! Out of all of the American Idiot songs I would have rather had Holiday or Wake Me Up When September Ends as the song in the category that represented this iconic album!

Record of the Year 2010

Winner: Use Somebody by Kings of Leon
Other Nominees: Halo by Beyoncé; I Gotta Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas; Poker Face by Lady Gaga; You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift

The 5 most overplayed songs of 2009 (pretends to be shocked that all of these got nominated)! Lady Gaga & Beyoncé got ROBBED!! Back then I would have loved for Taylor had won for You Belong With Me (it was my favorite song when I was 11) but based off of music, lyrics, & vocals I think Gaga or Beyoncé should have won! I Gotta Feeling reminds me of summer camp dances & good times but there's no way I would have been ok with that winning! It's a everyday mainstream radio hit not a Grammy winner! Use Somebody is a good song but it definitely was not my first choice for who I wanted to win!

Record of the Year 2019

Winner: This Is America by Childish Gambino
Other Nominees: All the Stars by Kendrick Lamar & SZA; God's Plan by Drake; I Like It by Cardi B, Bad Bunny, & J Balvin; The Joke by Brandi Carlile; The Middle by Zedd, Marren Morris, & Grey; Rockstar by Post Malone & 21 Savage; Shallow by Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper

Before I get into specifics about this click here to see my nomination thoughts from that year!
This Is America was definitely in my top 4 for this category because I love me some Childish Gambino but now I've had a year to soak in last year's awards I think it should have gone to my ultimate first choice which was All the Stars! This Is America was well deserving of it don't get me wrong but I would have been thrilled if All the Stars had won! I still think this 8 per category thing is SUPER OVERWHELMING!

My Thoughts For This Year!

I'm going to copy & past what I said in my nomination thoughts post & then make my last minute thoughts & predictions!
Record of the Year:
Hey Ma by Bon Iver
Bad Guy by Billie Eilish
7 Rings by Ariana Grande
Hard Place by H.E.R.
Talk by Khalid
Old Town Road by Lil Nas X & Billy Ray Cyrus
Truth Hurts by Lizzo
Sunflower by Post Malone & Swae Lee
Who I  want to win: Khalid, H.E.R., Ariana, or Lizzo
Who is realistically going to win: Lizzo or Old Town Road
My opinion on the category: Let's be honest, this category is ALL OVER THE PLACE! There's way too many different types of nominees. Knowing the Grammy's they are going to go with the most played song & as much as it pains me to say they will probably go with Old Town Road based off the fact they broke so many Billboard records. I think more of talent when it comes to the Grammy's & personally I think Khalid or H.E.R. should win based off of talent & brilliance!

I'm still staying true to who I want to win! From every prediction website I've looked at 95% of them have said they predict Bad Guy to win which I won't be too thrilled with! I just don't think Buy Guy is Billie's best song but that's just my opinion! I  REALLY REALLY want Khalid of H.E.R. to win but I also wouldn't be mad if Ariana or Lizzo won! I would be mad if Old Town Road won (I'm just not a big fan of that song). I'm still asking who Bon Iver is because I still don't know who that is! Sunflower isn't my favorite Posty song but I love Posty so much that if he won for this I wouldn't be upset! I'm super looking forward to who's going to win every category tomorrow!
