Grammys Song of the Year Over the Years!
Hey guys! Today's post is a VERY long overdue one but I've been missing awards show season so much this Quarantine & earlier this year during Grammys week, I did a ton of Grammys themed posts! One of the posts I did that I had THE MOST fun with was my Grammys Record of The Year winners over the years. Click here to check out my Record of the Year Over the Years post from January!
Today's post is going to be about the Song of the Year category!! I'm going to start off with the year 1996 (the year before I was born) & go from there! STAY TUNED because coming up REAL soon, I'm going to make my VERY early Grammys predictions for the 2021 awards!! It's a post currently in the making (I'm waiting till after Chromatica releases to fully release the post) but I am THRILLED to finally make some early predictions!!
Song of the Year 1996
Winner: Kiss from a Rose by Seal
Other Nominees: One of Us by Joan Osbourne; I Can Love You Like That by All-4-One; You Are Not Alone by Michael Jackson; You Oughta Know by Alanis Morrissette
I had reviewed the same year in my Record of the Year post & I'm probably going to say the exact thing I said in that post about Kiss from a Rose winning & how Seal well deserved it! In this category there were so many great & iconic songs but personally from growing up listening to Seal, I would have chosen this song in a heart beat!
Song of the Year 2000
Winner: Smooth by Santana & Rob Thomas
Other Nominees: I Want It That Way by Backstreet Boys; Livin La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin; Unpretty by TLC; You've Got A Way by Shania Twain
SO MANY ICONIC SONGS & CLASSICS IN THIS CATEGORY! I would have been STUMPED! Every song is completely different in their own way so personally for me that's why I would've been so stumped. Many of these songs could have won & I would have been happy but Smooth well deserved it!
Song of the Year 2002
Winner: Fallin by Alicia Keys
Other Nominees: Video by India.Arie; Drops of Jupiter by Train; Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of by U2; I'm Like a Bird by Nelly Furtado
Honestly, they did right by picking Fallin & I'm not just saying that because I'm a Alicia Keys fan & I grew up listening to this song but out of all of the songs nominated, Fallin had something real special to it! Very well deserved!
Song of the Year 2003
Winner: Don't Know Why by Norah Jones
Other Nominees: A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton; Complicated by Avril Lavigne; The Rising by Bruce Springsteen; Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning) by Alan Jackson
I would have been stumped between 3 of them! Norah, Vanessa, & Avril. Norah's voice is super cool, soothing, & unique so I totally see why it won! I grew up more listening to Vanessa & Avril (especially Avril) so I probably would've been upset back then over the winner but now, I'm satisfied. Goes to show you, 2002 had top notch music!
Song of the Year 2005
Winner: Daughters by John Mayer
Other Nominees: If I Ain't Got You by Alicia Keys; Jesus Walks by Kanye West; Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw; The Reason by Hoobstack
I personally would have been stumped between John & Alicia because I love both of these songs so much! I maybe would have rooted for Alicia a little more but John deserved it for this song. Daughters is one of my all time favorite songs by him so I'm completely ok with the fact it got it's proper recognition by the Recording Academy!
Song of the Year 2009
Winner: Viva la Vida by Coldplay
Other Nominees: American Boy by Estelle & Kanye West; Chasing Pavements by Adele; I'm Yours by Jason Mraz; Love Song by Sara Bareilles
Honestly. What were we thinking? I love me some Coldplay but I was never a huge Viva la Vida fan. It was just super overplayed back then that now I'm just kind of like eh with the song. Personally, Sara & Jason got ROBBED it should have been one of them!
Song of the Year 2010
Winner: Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) by Beyoncé
Other Nominees: Poker Face by Lady Gaga; Pretty Wings by Maxwell; Use Somebody by Kings of Leon; You Belong with Me by Taylor Swift
SO MANY STRAIGHT UP BOPS WERE NOMINATED! 2009 really was the year of BOPS! I would have been torn personally between Beyoncé, Gaga, & Taylor but Single Ladies literally is HISTORICAL & now over 10 years later considered a CLASSIC in my books! Beyoncé well deserved the recording academy recognition for this song that is for sure!
Song of the Year 2012
Winner: Rolling in the Deep by Adele
Other Nominees: All of the Lights by Kanye West; The Cave by Mumford & Sons; Grenade by Bruno Mars; Holocene by Bon Iver
Most of these nominees are a huge YIKES from me except for Bruno & Adele so Adele well deserved it for this iconic song of hers!
Song of the Year 2013
Winner: We Are Young by Fun & Janelle Monae
Other Nominees: The A Team by Ed Sheeran; Adorn by Miguel; Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen; Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) by Kelly Clarkson
Honestly... everyone who got nominated & didn't win got robbed! We Are Young was so overplayed & there was a time in my life where I liked it but now thinking back on it, I'm less thrilled with this song out of all of the songs nominated.
Song of the Year 2015
Winner: Stay with Me by Sam Smith
Other Nominees: Take Me to Church by Hozier; Chandelier by Sia; Shake It Off by Taylor Swift; All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor
I'm not a huge fan of a lot of these songs if we are being honest. Shake It Off is the only song on this list that I still listen to. Stay with Me is not my favorite of Sam's but I'm not mad or surprised it won! I would have much rather have had that won over a lot of these songs in my personal opinion. I just wasn't listening to a bunch of mainstream radio around this time (I was a junior in high school when most of these songs came out). Even now, if All About That Bass comes on shuffle I'll skip it.
Song of the Year 2016
Winner: Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran
Other Nominees: Alright by Kendrick Lamar; Blank Space by Lady Gaga; Girl Crush by Little Big Town; See You Again by Wiz Khalifa & Charlie Puth
Honestly, any song could have won & I wouldn't have been mad! I really enjoy every song in their own ways! I remember when Ed won this & watching it, I was SO HAPPY FOR ED! Around this time, I was really starting to get into his music & I even attended the Multiply Tour which was AMAZING! I am still so happy for Ed, VERY WELL DESERVED!
Song of the Year 2017
Winner: Hello by Adele
Other Nominees: Formation by Beyoncé; I Took a Pill in Ibiza by Mike Posner; Love Yourself by Justin Bieber; 7 Years by Lukas Graham
I REMEMBER BEING SO MAD ABOUT THIS!!! I wanted Beyoncé to win so badly because let's face it, Formation was BRILLIANT in every way & deserved every award possible! At least Adele dedicated her album of the year award that year to Beyoncé's Lemonade which Adele is a QUEEN for doing that!
Song of the Year 2018
Winner: That's What I Like by Bruno Mars
Other Nominees: Despacito by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, & Justin Bieber; 4:44 by Jay-Z; Issues by Julia Michaels; 1-800-273-8255 by Logic, Alessia Cara, & Khalid
I mean I love Bruno Mars but that year I campaigned so hard for 1-800 to win because the message was so powerful & every time I hear that song to this day I tear up!
Song of the Year 2019
Winner: This Is America by Childish Gambino
Other Nominees: All the Stars by Kendrick Lamar & SZA; Boo'd Up by Ella Mai; God's Plan by Drake; In My Blood by Shawn Mendes; The Joke by Brandi Carlile; The Middle by Maren Morris & Grey; Shallow by Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper
This was the year they started doing way too many nominees & I wanted several of these people to win! If you have followed the blog for a while & remember my nominations thoughts (search Grammys Nominations Thoughts on the search box at the side of my blog to find it) I was happy this won but it wasn't my first option (I'm such a Shawn Mendes stan & was campaigning HARD for that)!
